What is this community?
It's a way for friends of [livejournal.com profile] elisem to keep up with the latest news after she has hip replacement surgery. It's a community so that multiple people can post updates easily.

We have an email account to help coordinate communication - please send all offers of help, requests to visit, or any other such things to helping.the.lioness@gmail.com

Where should I watch for announcements?
We will be posting regular updates at http://hip-hooray.dreamwidth.org . See the Technical FAQ for information about adding the community to your friends page, circle, or RSS reader, and for information on commenting options.

(Why Dreamwidth? The name hip_hooray was not available on LiveJournal, and Dreamwidth is easy to leave comments on. Also, no ads for anyone. LiveJournal folks: check out the Technical FAQ for information on using your LiveJournal OpenID account to leave comments here.)

What kind of surgery?
Elise is having total hip replacement surgery. Her right hip joint, which has been damaged and deteriorating since she was five, will be replaced with a cobalt-chromium hip joint.

My grandmother/aunt/teacher/potions instructor/bioengineered stegosaurus beta reading buddy had a hip replacement and was mowing the lawn and dancing the polka within three weeks. Will this be like that?
Probably not. Due to the particulars of this procedure and the architecture of the Elise, her surgeon has told her to expect a three-month recuperation period with no travel. While she'll be sitting up, walking, and embarking on a program of lots and lots (and lots and lots and lots) of physical therapy fairly soon after the surgery, it'll be a while before she's prancing about or going out on the town.

While recuperation might not wind up taking this long, this is the way she was told to plan -- and she intends to be sensible and do everything they tell her. You can be assured that she'll be counting the days until she can go to the bead warehouse again, and until she can be back at the workbench full time.

What are the important dates?
Elise's surgery will begin at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, July 14th. Her tentative release date from the hospital is Saturday, July 18th. This may change with little notice. Watch the community for updates.

Elise's birthday is August 22. While she will not be cleared for takeoff yet, she hopes to be handling many routine tasks by then, and may be up for some birthday-type socializing. (PAAAR-TAY! says the Lioness in the background.)

The three months of expected recuperation will end on October 14.

Can I help?
We've had a lot of wonderful offers of help - but we welcome more. There will probably be various errands, small tasks, or unexpected developments, and helpers for those would be much appreciated.

The care and feeding of the Elise is being primarily facilitated by four people:
- Juan (her husband)
- Sonya Winter (visiting lady's companion)
- Daniel (her assistant, handling household details and business emails -- for details on how to reach him about Lioness jewelry or Beads of the Month questions, see end of this post)
- Jenett (external brain and social secretary)

Most communication about what would be helpful will probably be with Jenett, but all of us have access to messages sent to the helping.the.lioness@gmail.com account.

Can I visit?
Besides the fact that recuperating from major surgery takes a lot out of a person, please remember that conversation can be much more tiring for Elise than for most people, because she's hard of hearing and has to lip-read. We want to make sure that Elise has plenty of energy to heal, so we are going to be careful in scheduling any visits until we know how things are going.

If you're interested in visiting, please email Jenett at helping.the.lioness@gmail.com with an idea of when you might be available (evenings, weekends, specific days, etc.) We'll let you know what looks possible.

Please also keep in mind:
- You should not visit if you or anyone in your household or close contact (like someone you share an office with) is sick. We'll be glad to reschedule when everyone's better.

- Initial visits will probably be quite short - again, we're being really cautious here to make sure Elise has plenty of energy for healing and physical therapy. Emails (and comments here)are welcome at any time.

- Elise will have very strict limits on the amount of twisting or turning her torso she is allowed to do, particularly at first, so it is very important that you position yourself so she can see your lips without needing to twist or turn.

Can I call?
Unless Elise lets you know otherwise, please email instead. Due to her hearing loss, phone conversations are exhausting. Email is easier, and is also less likely to interrupt a medical appointment, a physical therapy or occupational therapy session, or other important task.

I want to send something - what would Elise like?
- Swarovski crystal beads in interesting shapes. (Elise says that anything in the 2XAB beads makes her very happy.)

- Books for the Kindle or other interesting reading material (an Amazon wishlist is in progress: link here when we have it.) Her current non-fiction fascination centers around the year 1881 in the US and Canada, plus the two decades prior to that time, particularly focusing on people of color, newspapers, mineral strikes, touring theatrical troupes, folktales and magical creatures of various cultures, the 54th Massachusetts or the Minnesota regiments or other Civil War veterans after the war was over, or any combination thereof.

(The Lioness says: "My ideal research books would be the annotated journals of a husband and wife team who ran the newspaper in one of the Black settlements in the midwest or west, preferably covering the dates that Oscar Wilde came through the area on his 1883 tour. Or a history of "Wild West shows" from the perspective of some of the
Native Americans who worked in them, with lots of footnotes and context on inter-tribal relations as well as other interactions. Or a detailed study of Chinese-American history in the nineteenth century, with as much analysis as possible. You get the drift.")

- Heaven and Earth Essentials products, especially lotion sticks and shampoo. Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab and Nocturne Alchemy are two sources of the scents she uses for pain and mood management; details are available from Jenett on specific favorite or unfavorite notes.

- Popsicles or frozen fruit bars without artificial sweeteners: rootbeer is her favorite, but she likes fruit flavors as well.

- Sushi, now and then (It's easy on the system, which is important for somebody who also has Crohn's disease. Ask Jenett about her favorites, but unagi, salmon skin roll, hamachi, saba, and the onigiri from Floating World are all favorites.)

- DVDs and music. Lionesses love mix CDs, among other things, and there is a boombox with serious volume ability here. This particular Lioness has very eclectic taste and is quite willing to be educated by new music. IMPORTANT: If you are sending or loaning a DVD, please make sure it has captions. Otherwise she won't catch more than ten percent of the dialogue, and she will become a mournful and frustrated Lioness.

Are there things I should absolutely avoid?
Any artificial sweetener. Period.
Popcorn.
Fruits with small seeds (strawberry, raspberry, etc.)
Nuts
Lavender, tea tree, eucalyptus, ylang ylang, or rose scented products.
She has enough soap to last forever right now.

I have a Lioness jewelry question, need to check on an order, want to order a Beads of the Month package, have an address change for you, or have some other business-related question. Who do I contact?

Contact Daniel, a.k.a. Stitch, who is Elise's assistant and does all the shipping and invoicing for Lioness and BotMo. To order jewelry or other items listed on Elise's LJ, send email to gimme@lioness.net as usual, and Daniel will confirm your order and send you an invoice.

For Beads of the Month questions or orders, send email to botmo@lioness.net, which will be routed to Daniel for the duration. For any other Lioness questions, you can reach Daniel at stitchandlioness@gmail.com. Thanks!
